PRO TIPS

5 Reasons Your AC Might Fail This April
-
Clogged Air Filters: After a winter of running the heat, your filters are likely packed with dust. A restricted system is a failing system that will freeze up. Now is a good time to change your filter.
-
Clogged Drain Lines: Algae and sludge build up in your drain line over the winter. When the AC starts producing condensation in April, that water has nowhere to go but your ceiling, floor, or crawl space.
-
Capacitor Failure: These are like the "batteries" for your motors. The first hot day of the year is when they usually pop. If your unit does not sound like your used to hearing it sound call a professional. Capacitor failures can cause motors and compressors run erratically and sound different. If not repaired a failed capacitor can cause a more expensive replacement like a motor or compressor.
-
Pest Damage: Mice and ants love nesting in electrical compartments during the winter. They chew wires and short out contactors. If your have ants around your unit have them treated by pest control.
-
Dirty Coils: a dirty coil is one of the #1 killers of efficiency in South Carolina. If your coils are dirty the unit can not transfer heat properly. Having a spring cleaning done increases your chance of proper heat transfer during the hottest days and helps protect you from catastrophic failures that are expensive.
The Upstate "Coil Killer": It’s More Than Just Dirt
In our part of South Carolina, your outdoor unit has a lot working against it. Most people think a quick spray with a garden hose is enough, but they don’t see what’s actually packed inside those fins.
It’s a mix of Upstate Red Clay, heavy grass clippings from the mower, dead leaves, and even insects looking for a home. When the humidity hits, that red clay dust acts like a glue, trapping the grass and debris inside the coils. Over time, this creates a thick, "brick-like" barrier that chokes your system.
Why it matters: When your coils are choked, the heat has nowhere to go. Your compressor runs hotter and longer, your power bill climbs, and eventually, the whole system just gives up.
The Pro Tip: A standard "hose-off" usually just pushes the debris deeper. You need a professional deep-clean that uses the right chemicals to break down that red clay and wash out the grass and bugs without damaging the fragile aluminum fins.

CUT GRASS AWAY FROM YOUR UNIT: It's easy to make this mistake. Saturday morning in a hurry to get the grass cut so you can get to your next errand on wrong turn and the unit is covered in grass.
